action learning

Action learning is a unique structure for support and challenge. It enables people to reflect on the best way to unravel difficult problems and creates the potential for real organisational change. Set members report an increased sense of personal awareness and confidence in managing conflict and change, building more productive working relationships.

Action learning sets consist of between 5- 8 people who want to explore issues and challenges. The set has strong boundaries around confidentiality and creates a safe and trusted space through non-directive questioning techniques. Everyone gains valuable skills in listening at a deep level. By linking reflection to actions, learning becomes deeper and more long lasting.

Sets meet on a regular basis. Everyone has the chance to present their issues and agrees to actions as a result. The set becomes a valuable support network and provides the chance to work through areas of challenging decision-making.

I developed an Action Learning Programmer for Devon County Council for managers and team leaders, using action learning to support them through the challenges of restructure.  This included training managers in-house to become AL faciIitators. I have also worked with groups of self-employed sole traders, using action learning as a tool for business growth.
